2020 Edition Worldwide Market Share Analysis of Thermal Waste Treatment Plants Now Available

Worldwide award volume for Energy from Waste (EfW) plants in 2019 shows a mixed picture in the different regions . While EMEA showed approx. 23% growth, the global volume decreased due to lower recorded awards in the Chinese market.

AVP’s “Market Share Analysis of Thermal Waste Treatment Plants” has been published annually since 2002 and covers in one comprehensive report, worldwide EfW awards from 2010 to 2019. The analysis is done entirely on the basis of thermal treatment capacity (furnace capacity) and is derived from reference list analysis, information provided directly by suppliers and developers, and respective clarifications. Technologies taken into account include traditional grate, fluidized bed, gasification, pyrolysis, plasma and other advanced technologies for thermal treatment of municipal and commercial solid waste. Fuels covered include mixed municipal waste, commercial waste, RdF and Multifuel. To best reflect actual market size and market share, and to analyze long-term trends in a consistent way, our analysis recognizes (as much as possible) “awards” strictly upon “confirmed financial close and/or construction start”.

Important analysis elements for this report include:

  • Regional/country analysis
  • Market share by supplier and region
  • Market split by technology
  • Market split by fuel sources
  • Analysis by contract type e.g. new capacity, replacement, revamping
  • Backlog analysis by market and supplier (plants under construction to be started up 2020 or later)
  • Detailed 10-year trending analysis for all data provided

Additional data tracked in our proprietary database
Whenever possible, we track additional information project-by-project, which is not part of this report such as:

  • More in-depth customer information and segmentation
  • Contract type – e.g. BOO, EPC, technology packages, etc.
  • CAPEX information
  • More detailed Flue Gas Cleaning Technology information and market shares
  • Awards in the sewage sludge incineration/gasification market
  • European historic EfW awards back to 2000, Global EfW awards back to 2008

This information can be made available in connection with in-depth market/regional analysis, competitor analysis, trending, etc.

The analysis for 2019 market development shows a mixed picture in the different regions:

  • EMEA award volume grew 23% over 2018 driven by awards in various markets including Germany, Switzerland, France, in addition to the UK market. In parallel, the market for sewage sludge mono-incineration (not part of this study) has started to take off in 2019 with solid mid and long-term outlook. Thanks to these two positive market factors, capacity utilization and backlog in the energy-from-waste industry in EMEA has increased significantly.
  • With about 85’000 tpd, the worldwide award volume in 2019 is below the 2018 peak mainly due to the decrease of recorded awards in China, but still 25% above the long-term average. Some of the decrease in China might be due to incomplete reporting by Chinese companies due to Corona virus pandemic.
  • The award volume in Japan was slightly below its long-term average
  • After 2018 was a peak year for Asia and Oceania (outside China and Japan), in 2019 we recorded a significant reduction of the award volume mainly driven by project delays and reduced awards in India.
  • In the US, the first large waste-to-jet fuel project is scheduled for completion and commercial operation in 2020
